As Division Chief for the Commodity Security and Logistics (CSL) Division in USAID’s Office of Population and Reproductive Health, Alan leads a team of 20 staff dedicated to being a world leader in ensuring the long-term availability for clients of a wide range of high-quality contraceptives and family planning/reproductive health (FP/RH) commodities through public and private channels. Alan provides technical and administrative leadership and guidance for a portfolio of over $50 million annually for commodity procurement and supply chain technical assistance worldwide. Alan is also a member of the senior management team for the Office of Population and Reproductive Health, the senior leadership team for USAID’s Global Health Supply Chain Program, and currently serves on the steering committee for the Global Family Planning Visibility and Analytics Network, Advisory Group for the International Association of Public Health Logisticians, and Board for People that Deliver. Since 2002, Alan has provided technical support for USAID programs in Rwanda, Jordan, Ukraine, Bangladesh, the Gambia and West Africa region.  He currently supports the Agency’s supply chain program in Nigeria, one of its largest.

Alan’s previous work included facilitating U.S.-Africa scientific cooperation while at the American Association for the Advancement of Science (2000-02), strengthening monitoring and evaluation for parks and wildlife management in Kenya while with USAID/Kenya (1998-2000), and managing the Demographic and Health Surveys Project in USAID/Washington (1996-98). Alan began his career as a professor of biological sciences at Smith and Hampshire Colleges. He has a doctorate in zoology from Duke University and a bachelor’s degree in biology from Williams College.
